What we call The Lead system in NLP
is used to access stored information. Watching Eye Accessing Cues
discovers the Lead System. It is thought (although I don't know where the information comes from) that it is the system you were born with or learned early on in life.
You do not always show that system to the outside world; for instance when asked a question, someone may always create a picture first (even if it's for a nano second.....then change it to another representational system for outward worldy processing.
