NLP & Motivation in Sports 2

This is the 2nd instalment of NLP in Sports. If you want to look the first article you can view NLP in Sports 1 here:

Firstly, think of your goals in your sport. Picture how important it is for you to achieve what you want.  Get into about how much you want to make the starting line-up or get the call up to your chosen team. It’s a good tool using NLP in sports to have a motivating reason for anything you do, yet when you have touched on the emotion of what you want, be prepared to let the goals go!

Success in athletics and life is a paradox. You will play that great game, win the title, score all those points, pitch the perfect game only when you let of the desire to do so while you are engaged in the performance. One of the biggest mistakes made by coaches and athletes is being too attached to the outcome as you go into and during that all important performance.

I was at the training course for a practice round with professional  golf coach and NLP trainer Adam Sprackling today. He says the same thing about a golf swing.

“After you do the preparation and know you have practiced the right things, when it comes to putting this into practice you must trust your mind and body to do the right things for you. Too much thinking about your swing on the day can be counter productive”

Adam Sprackling

When it counts the most, you must let go of outcome and trust yourself. In the golf analogy, focusing on loving the swing will get you more yardage than planting your eyes on the horizon waiting for the outcome!

When you trust your training, trust your hard work, trust your muscle memory and relax letting the game, match or race come to you. This is the best way that you can be successful and towards making you  happy in the process. Holding on to the importance of this performance and dwelling on all that’s at stake and how badly you need to win will only kill your joy, rob you of your courage and steal your heart in the process.

Putting NLP in sports is the same as putting NLP in business; it gives you the edge to stay focused on the important parts of your game. It will also keep you happy and therefore relaxed and performing at an optimum level.
